03.2 Humanitarian Assistance

ICODES has carried out an economic contribution in concept of humanitarian help in Morocco. This economic help has been channeled through the GNO “Churriana sin Fronteras”. October, 2007.

This help has been destined to the Association Kimitra of orphan children, to Tangier’s Association of Persons with Disabilities and to several schools. The help consists in food, clothes, shoes and school materials. As we all know, it is necessary to increase the framework of the basic social needs in this region, and therefore the cooperation must have an evident social character in order to promote the development and fight against poverty. With this generic goal in mind, the goal of the activities that have been carried out within the sphere of these projects is to help the least favoured collectivities in the North of Morocco.

ICODES has carried out an economic contribution in concept of humanitarian help in response forthe floods caused by the tropical storm “Noel” in the Dominican Republic. This economical help has been channeled through the University INTEC of Santo Domingo. November, 2007.

Thetropical storm “Noel” has crossed the Dominican Republic a few days ago and has caused damages in 29 provinces, out of the 32 the country has. The magnitude of this disaster has obliged the Presidency of the Republic to decree the state of emergency of a period of time of 30 days, in order to facilitate the reception of humanitarian assistance. The country was stroken by the storm the past 26th of October and it intensively rained for several days. The official figures regading the impact of the tropical storm “Noel” indicate over 65.000 displaced people and 84 casualties due to the floods.

For years, ICODES has been collaboratin with the Dominican Republic, through Programs of Cooperation to Development, through financing different projects in education and training, institutional strengthening of the dominican administrations and management of the municipal public services. All theese activities have been achieved in collaboration with several dominican institutions (Santo Domingo’s Technological Institute, INTEC; the Dominican Federation of Municipalities, FEDOMU; the Nacional Council for Reform of the State, CONARE, or the Pontifical Catholic University Mother and Teacher in Santiago de los Caballeros), and thanks to a number of conventions suscribed with municipal organizations such as Seville and Malaga City Halls, the Board of Local Development, belonging to Huelva City Hall, as well as other organizations such as AENA (Spanish Airports and Air Navigation), Malaga Transport Center and Unicaja (a fundings organization).
Therefore, considering the hard times the country is going through and due to the close link that exist between our organization and the Dominican Republic, ICODES has procceeded to achieve an economic contribution to help the population, channeled through the local University INTEC (Santo Domingo’s Technological Institute), which is an indispensable benchmark when it comes to municipal management and independent organization. This experience will facilitate a fair distribution of the resources given.

The funding organization UNICAJA through its Community Services, collaborates with ICODES financing projects of international cooperation.
Among these project, we would like to emphasize the activities developed in the north of Morocco.
It is hoped that, both for ICODES and UNICAJA, the beginning of activities in this region means nothing but the beginning, and that in the near future more activities and projects can be programmed, wether of social and humanitarian nature or in order to increase the operative field with other measures and actions regarding training and technical assistance, in order to strengthen the cooperation and economic development in the region.
